Properties: Its trihydrate is commonly used. It is a white or off - white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water and insoluble in ethanol.

Mechanism of Action: By inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, it causes the bacteria to burst and die, belonging to bactericides in the reproductive period.

Antibacterial spectrum

Gram-positive bacteria: Such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus hemolyticus, Streptococcus viridans, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, etc.

Gram-negative bacteria: Such as Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella, Shigella, etc. (ineffective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa).

Spirochetes: Such as Treponema pallidum, Leptospira interrogans.

Clinical Uses

·Respiratory Tract Infections: Such as acute pharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis media, pneumonia, etc. (especially suitable for Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae infections).

·Urinary Tract Infections: Such as cystitis, pyelonephritis (caused by sensitive bacteria such as Escherichia coli).

·Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Such as furuncles, carbuncles, erysipelas, etc.

·Gastrointestinal tract infections: Used in combination with clarithromycin and lansoprazole to eradicate Helicobacter pylori (for the treatment of gastric ulcers and gastritis).

·Others: Such as gonorrhea (high doses required), typhoid fever, leptospirosis, etc.
