Basic Information: It is an ester of methylhydroxymethoxybenzoic acid produced by fermentation of Streptomyces viridochromogenes and belongs to the oligomeric carbohydrate antibiotics of the orthomycin family.

Physical and chemical properties: It is neutral, presents as colorless acicular crystals, with a melting point of 181 - 182 °C. It is slightly soluble in water and easily soluble in organic solvents such as acetone, propanol, ethyl acetate, benzene, and ether. It has multiple components. Among them, bambermycin A has the highest activity, with a molecular formula of C61H88Cl2O32 and a molecular weight of 1404.24. Followed by bambermycin B, which has high activity against staphylococci, with a molecular formula of C59H84Cl2O32 and a molecular weight of 1376.19.

Mechanism of action: By binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, it prevents the binding of the translation initiation factor IF2, inhibits the formation of the mature 70S initiation complex and the correct positioning of tRNA at the aminoacyl site, thus inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.

Antibacterial Activity: It is mainly active against Gram-positive bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for Bacillus, Clostridium, Corynebacterium, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus, Listeria monocytogenes, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus ranges from 0.0125 - 1.6 µg/ml. It has no antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria (including Escherichia coli), but it can reduce the production of pili on the surface of Escherichia coli, limit its adhesion to the intestinal mucosa, and prevent diarrhea in weaned piglets.
