Basic Information

Chemical Structure: A prodrug formed by the esterification of the C-2’ hydroxyl group of erythromycin with ethyl succinate. It is hydrolyzed by esterase in the body to the active ingredient, erythromycin.

Formulations:

For Human Use: Tablets, granules, suspensions (common in pediatric medications).

For Veterinary Use: Soluble powders, premixes, used for livestock and poultry (such as pigs, chickens) and aquatic animals.

Mechanism of action: It binds to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibits protein synthesis, and belongs to bacteriostatic agents (it has a bactericidal effect at high concentrations).

Antibacterial spectrum

Covered flora:

·Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus, Streptococcus (such as Streptococcus pneumoniae), Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bacillus anthracis, etc. are highly sensitive.

·Atypical pathogens: Effective against Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia, Legionella, spirochetes (such as Treponema pallidum).

·Some Gram-negative bacteria: Sensitive to Bordetella pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae (high dose required), and Campylobacter spp.

Limitations: Ineffective against most Enterobacteriaceae bacteria (such as Escherichia coli), and resistant to Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
